| A guide for safely enjoying climbing at this facility | |
| Thank you for visiting PUMP climbing gym.? Climbing can be a dangerous sport, and we ask that you take special care to avoid injury or accident while using this facility. This guide is a list of important points that we require you to observe while climbing at PUMP, and we sincerely ask that you take the time to read this guide before climbing.? Please observe these rules each time you visit | |
| Gym Use | |
Inportant point 1. Customers of junior high school age or under must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian (Where the customer has more than 1year of climbing experience, this requirement may be waived provided a test is passed). Gym usage times for young members differ from those of general customers. Please inquire at the front-desk for further details. 2. Children younger than elementary school age who are not climbing may not enter the climbing areas due to risk of injury or accident. |
| 3. Customers without sufficient climbing experience and customers without partners are prohibited from using the rope area. 5. For customers with health concerns, please stop climbing immediately if your condition worsens. 6. Please refrain from climbing shirtless or without climbing shoes. (Illustration A)7. To maintain air quality in the gym, we ask that all customers use chalk balls (no loose chalk). 8. Customers who ignore warnings or cautions from gym staff may be asked to leave. |

| Before climbing 1. Customers with long nails risk nail damage. Please use the nail clippers provided (ask staff at the front desk). 2. There is a danger of long hair becoming tangled in ropes and equipment. Please ensure long hair is tied back (Illustration B). 3. Rings and watches may be damaged, or may cause injury ? please remove these items before climbing. Please place valuables in the lockers provided. PUMP accepts no responsibility for any theft or loss that may occur ? please manage your belongings with care. 4. There is a danger that glasses may fall off while climbing. Please use a strap or band to secure glasses while climbing. 5. Please check your pockets before climbing to ensure that there are no objects which may fall from them. 6. Please change into clothes suitable for exercise and warm-up properly before starting to climb. |
Illustration B ![]() |
| Beware of falling objects In the climbing areas there is a serious risk of severe injury from climbers or objects falling and colliding with you from above. At all times, for your safety, please ensure you observe above and around you (Illustration A). Holds are affixed by bolts, but please keep in mind that in rare cases these holds may break or spin. Please remain conscious of this danger at all times and should you find a hold which is either damaged or loose, please report this to a staff member immediately. Should a hold fall from above and directly hit someone’s head, there is a danger of serious injury. A hold striking the ground may result in the hold breaking and the fragments flying upward. Should a climber or any object a climber is carrying fall, there is a similar risk of injury. While in a climbing area, take care and avoid entering the areas beneath climbers at all times. |

| Bouldering | |
| Bouldering is a form of climbing in which you climb on low walls without a rope. While mats are provided, these are not a 100% guarantee of safety. |
| Rules and etiquette 1. Do not enter the area beneath a climber. Should a climber fall, both the climber and the person below may be seriously injured. For this reason, sitting on the mats in the climbing area is dangerous and should be avoided in narrow areas or where climbers may fall. Please rest or wait outside these areas or off the mats (Illustration B). 2. Before climbing, check that the line you will climb will not cross that of another climber. On top of the danger of colliding and falling, you may prevent someone from reaching their climbing goal ? a common cause of problems between climbers. 3. Please be considerate to other climbers and do not spend excessive time on the same climb, particularly when others are waiting. 4. When the gym is crowded, please avoid trying the longer routes (these are marked by arrows and numbering). These routes traverse large sections of the gym, so please be sure to check the walls and people around you both before and while climbing. 6. Always observe your surroundings. Where walls face each other etc., climbers can also fall from behind you. Please be sure to check in front of you as well as around and behind you at all times. (Illustration D) 7. Please do not grab edges (for example, the top of the wall) unless indicated as a goal. Doing so is dangerous as there may be screws etc. which stick out. 8. Please do not boulder in a fashion that is dangerous, and caution others if you see a potential risk of injury. Problems which are largely outside of matted areas etc. are considered dangerous.

Landing when you fall 1. Always land on your feet (Illustration E). When you fall or descend from a climb, be sure to land on your feet and lessen the impact by bending your knees. Landing sideways or with straight legs can cause injury. 2. Please avoid dropping directly from the top of boulder problems. Many people have injured knees and backs as a result of jumping from too high, so if possible, please climb down to a lower and safer level before jumping off. 3. Before descending, please check carefully that there are no people or objects (eg. Brushes) where you will land. 4. Between mats and walls, there are places where there may be gaps. Please take care not to fall in such places as there is a risk of injury. |
Illustration E ![]() |
| For guardians or parents of children under elementary (primary) school age or younger 1. Please do not allow children to run, make a lot of noise or play on the matted areas (Illustration F). This behaviour will not only upset other climbers, but could also result in a serious accident through direct contact with falling climbers.? 2. Please watch your children at all times. If accompanied by more than one child please allow them to climb in one place only and one by one. 3. In higher areas where the child may fall or land, please provide support by raising your arms to assist them to climb and land safely (Illustration G). Please do not allow your children to climb or land when they are scared or otherwise uncomfortable. When spotting (providing support in case of a fall), it is necessary to watch the climber at all times. |

Roped climbing |
Rules and etiquette Without a complete understanding of how to use the climbing and belaying equipment and how to belay properly, there is a significant risk of serious accident, which could result in injury or death. Until the basic skills are properly mastered, use of the roped climbing area is forbidden. Use of the roped climbing area is limited to those who have, or are accompanied by someone who has the proper experience (eg. those who have attended the beginner school), or the knowldedge and ability to instruct. PUMP offers climbing schools to assist our customers to climb safely. |
Belay 1. The belayer must never let the climber fall to the ground. 3. Spot if it appears they may fall before the first clip. This means standing in position with arms up so that you can guide the climbers fall and in particular so you can ensure their head does not hit the ground. A fall from before the first clip may result in the climber falling upside down, resulting in head injury). 4. While belaying, never remove the stopping (brake) hand from the rope (Illustration H). Should the climber fall while your brake hand is not on the rope, the fall cannot be stopped. 5. Always watch the climber! Do not look away from the climber or allow yourself to be distracted. |

Illustration H ![]() |
6. Belaying too far back from the climber’s first clip is dangerous (Illustration I). When the belayer is too far from the wall and the climber falls, the belayer will be strongly pulled towards the wall. Because of this, the climber may fall to the ground! Note that the first 3-4metres of a climb are especially dangerous and require extra caution. Should the climber fall toward the lower part of a climb, there is a danger that the rope may go between the legs impeding movement or causing rope burns. To avoid this, please pay adequate attention to your belay position. Also keep in mind that when using a short rope, there is a danger that the rope end may pass through the belay device, resulting in the climber falling to the ground. 7. Take care not to feed-out (give) too much rope. When too much slack is given, there is a danger that if the climber falls, they may fall to the ground. If you see excessive slack in the rope, be sure to take in (pull in) the rope ? particular care is required when the climber starts to climb the lower section of the wall, or if the climber has missed a clip. 8. If you see a danger to the climber that they are unaware of, please alert them to this. Such dangers include forgetting to clip, z-clipping, back clipping, or when one is climbing too closely to another climber. |
| Equipment 1. Thoroughly read manufacturers instructions before using equipment. 2. ?Please do not use old ropes, harnesses or belay equipment that are in poor condition. 3. For children of elementary school age or younger, please ensure a helmet is worn (Illustration A). When small children fall, there is a danger of falling upside down resulting in head injury. PUMP can provide helmets for your use. 4. Only use ‘single ropes’ in the gym. Single ropes are indicated by a @ on the tape at the end of the rope. 6.Ensure the rope is tied tightly and in the correct position. Please do not attach to the gear rack or belay loop. 7. We recommend you tie in using the Figure 8 knot. If you are unsure about the safety of the knot once tied, please retie from the beginning. 8. Please wear a harness that fits you correctly. If a harness is too big, there is a risk that you may fall out of it. Where harnesses require that the waist strap is threaded back through the buckle (double-backed), please ensure this is done tightly. The strap that has been threaded through the buckle should extend at least 10cm. Also, be aware there is a risk that this strap may unfasten. 9. Due to a number of accidents caused by inexperience, lead belaying with auto-locking belay devices, such as the GriGri, Cinch etc, is not permitted (Illustration B). Most accidents have been caused by gripping the lever when a climber falls, using a thinner than specified rope, releasing both hands from the belay device etc. We ask that you use an ATC or a Figure Eight (Illustration B). For top-roping, accidents using auto-locking belay devices are extremely rare. These devices may be used for top-roping. |

Climber 1. Deliberately missing clips while climbing is not allowed (Illustration K). Please keep to the route and ensure that you clip the rope through all quick-draws as you climb. Failing to clip just one quick-draw can result in a dangerous long-fall or ground-fall. Climbing off-route, back clipping, etc., may also result in the rope unclipping, again creating the risk of a long-fall a or ground-fall. 2. Do not move while holding the rope in your hand or mouth. Should you slip or run out of power while doing so there is risk of a long-fall or ground-fall. 3. Do not grip hangers or carabiners (Illustration L.). If you should fall while holding a hanger or carabiner, there is a severe risk of injury or even loss of fingers. |
4. Do not allow the rope to position itself behind your body or legs (Illustration F). 5.After climbing please pull your rope through quickly to allow others to climb. Ensure you untie any knots before pulling the rope. 6.While top-roping, do not climb too far away from the vertical line of the anchor where the rope is fixed. Failure to do so may result in a large and dangerous swing should you fall. Illustration M |

| Rules and etiquette 1. Please conduct a safety check before climbing. Survey your surroundings and call out to inform those nearby that you are about to climb. When you descend or rest during a climb please call or indicate this to your belayer and others climbing nearby. Please note that when the gym is busy, it may be more difficult to communicate with those around you. 2. Check the goal number for the route you wish to climb before starting to climb (Illustration N). Failure to check and maintain your line may result in collisions with other climbers. Please ensure you do not push ahead of others waiting to climb or climb where you may interfere with climbers already on the wall. Please wait until other climbers have descended before beginning to climb. 4. When the gym is busy please avoid spending too much time on routes, hang-dogging, climbing above your level and down climbing - other climbers will be waiting to climb. We, however, ask that you understand when climbing schools or introduction sessions are run by the gym, and use parts of the gym for extended periods of time. 5. Please do not remove top-ropes set up by the gym. Should the person who climbed before you leave a knot in the rope do not use this knot. Instead, please retie the knot and tie in by yourself or with the assistance of the person instructing you. 6.When setting up your own rope for top-rope use, please ensure that the rope is secured in at least two places. |
7. When top-roping on steeply overhanging walls, ensure that the rope is secured to as many quick draws as possible from bottom to top (Illustration O). Failing to do this will result in a large and dangerous swing should you fall. 8. Please consider weight differences between the climber and belayer. Elementary school aged climbers may not belay one other. Junior high school aged climbers may only belay one another in the presence of an experienced climber (this does not apply where these climbers have passed a test given by staff).
